Habib Metro Bank Overview
History, ownership, leadership, and key facts about Pakistan’s leading trade-finance bank.
- Founded 1992
- PSX: HMB
- AAA/A-1+ Rated (PACRA)
Habib Metro Bank — formally Habib Metropolitan Bank Limited, branded HABIBMETRO — is one of Pakistan’s leading private commercial banks, and if you ask anyone in trade finance, they’ll tell you it’s the name to beat on that side of the business. Here’s what the numbers and filings actually say, not the brochure version.
The bank started life in October 1992 as Metropolitan Bank Limited. In October 2006, Habib Bank AG Zurich (HBZ) — a Switzerland-incorporated bank owned by the Habib family — folded its Pakistan branch network into Metropolitan Bank, and the combined entity took the name Habib Metropolitan Bank Limited. It's been listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange under HMB ever since, and it sits in the KSE-100.

Ownership: Who Owns Habib Metro Bank?
Follow the ownership chain and you land in Zurich: Habib Bank AG Zurich (HBZ), a privately held Swiss bank founded in 1967 by Hyder Mohamedali Habib, holds 51% of HabibMetro's issued share capital — enough for outright control. HBZ itself goes back further, to a family banking operation Mohamedali Habib set up in 1941, and today it runs operations across Switzerland, the UAE, Kenya, Canada, Hong Kong, South Africa, and the UK.
Worth clearing up, since people mix the two up constantly: HabibMetro sits under the Mohammedali Habib branch of the House of Habib. Bank AL Habib — similar name, similar heritage — belongs to the Dawood Habib branch instead. Related family, separate banks, separate management.
Ownership structure confirmed from PACRA’s June 2026 rating action report and HabibMetro’s official Board of Directors disclosures.

As of the FY2025 annual report, the Board comprises Ali Abbas Sikander, Hamza Habib, Mohomed Bashir (Chairman, Gul Ahmed Textile Mills), Mohsin A. Nathani (HMB President/CEO 2018–2023, now on HBZ’s General Management), Muhammad H. Habib, and Rashid Ahmed Jafer, alongside the Chairman and CEO.
Leadership details confirmed from the Corporate Information section of HabibMetro’s audited Annual Report for the year ended 31 December 2025.
Scale, Trade Finance, and Islamic Banking
By the close of 2025, the branch count stood at 562 — 243 of them dedicated Islamic Banking Branches, plus another 311 Islamic windows running under the SIRAT brand — across 229 cities, with one offshore unit in the Karachi Export Processing Zone. The bank added 11 branches and pushed into 8 new cities that year alone. Correspondent relationships stretch across 70-plus countries, which is really the backbone of why HabibMetro's trade-finance desk punches above its weight.
Digital uptake moved fast in 2025 too: total digital transactions climbed 22% to 56 million, mobile banking transactions jumped 42% to 29.6 million, and digital transaction value rose 40% to Rs. 1.53 trillion — Rs. 1.28 trillion of that through mobile alone. The bank also rolled out fully digital account opening during the year and picked up over 76,000 accounts through that channel.
Credit Rating
PACRA moved HabibMetro's long-term rating up to "AAA" in June 2026, from "AA+" — a rating the bank had carried without interruption since 2001, so this was its first change in a quarter-century. Short-term stayed at "A1+", Outlook Stable. The case for the upgrade wasn't hard to make: deposits up 20.8% to PKR 1,119.6 billion, non-markup income up 15.1% to PKR 24.5 billion, and a 17% capital adequacy ratio built entirely on retained earnings — no subordinated debt propping it up.
Rating and CY2025 figures confirmed from PACRA’s official rating action report, June 2026.
