  • In-App Mode Switch
  • VEON-Backed Expansion

Mobilink Microfinance Bank's Islamic banking division offers three named Shariah-compliant products: Takmeel (a current account), Yaqeen (a savings account), and Umeed (Murabaha-structured financing), launched in December 2025 under an SBP Islamic Banking licence. This page covers what's actually been announced and named by MMBL, rather than assuming feature parity with the bank's much older conventional business.

MMBL's Islamic Banking Launch

MMBL launched Islamic banking operations in December 2025 under an Islamic Banking licence granted by the State Bank of Pakistan earlier that year — opening a dedicated branch in Karachi first, followed by a second in Peshawar. In an August 2026 interview, President & CEO Haaris Mahmood Chaudhary confirmed MMBL is running these as Islamic banking "windows" and plans to scale nationwide alongside launching a dedicated digital Islamic portfolio. This extended MMBL's product range beyond conventional microfinance and positioned the bank to serve customers who specifically want Sharia-compliant banking products. In January 2026, VEON announced a further USD 20 million investment into MMBL, which the company said would in part strengthen MMBL's Islamic banking expansion going forward.

Launch date and VEON investment purpose confirmed from MMBL's own December 2025 announcement and VEON's January 2026 investment disclosure, reported by Developing Telecoms.

Islamic Banking in the DOST App

Dedicated Islamic Mode

The DOST app added a dedicated Islamic banking experience, letting Islamic customers access the app with features tailored to Sharia-compliant banking.

Banking Mode Switch

Customers can toggle between Islamic and conventional banking modes within the same DOST app, rather than needing a separate app.

Zakat & Donations

The app supports making Zakat and donation payments directly, a feature tied into MMBL's Islamic banking rollout.

App features confirmed from MMBL's current App Store listing for the DOST app, which specifically lists these Islamic banking updates.

Context: Why Now?

MMBL's Islamic banking launch follows a broader pattern in Pakistan's banking sector, where the State Bank of Pakistan has pushed for wider Islamic banking availability across both commercial and microfinance institutions. VEON's stated intent to use part of its January 2026 investment to strengthen MMBL's Islamic banking offering suggests this is a strategic priority for the bank's ownership group, not a minor side product.

MMBL's Named Islamic Banking Products

As of MMBL's Islamic banking launch, three specific Shariah-compliant products are confirmed by name — closing what was previously an unconfirmed gap:

Takmeel (Current Account)

A Shariah-guided current account supporting everyday transactions.

Yaqeen (Savings Account)

A Shariah-compliant savings account for managing deposits.

Umeed (Murabaha Financing)

Transparent, halal funding for individual and household needs, structured as Murabaha (asset sale transaction) financing.

MMBL's Shariah Advisor is Mufti Syed Muhammad Umer Amaduddin; all products undergo Shariah review and approval before launch, with certificates available on MMBL's website or branch notice boards. Beyond these three named products, MMBL has confirmed it is building further Sharia-compliant offerings around musharakah (partnership-based financing), murabaha, and agri-based Salam structures, with a strategic focus on small-business, value-chain, digital agri-, and digital home financing — MMBL has not published a full rate card for these broader offerings, so confirm current terms directly for anything beyond the three named products above.

Recent Expansion: Yango Partnership (August 2026)

MMBL partnered with ride-hailing service Yango Pakistan to offer eligible Yango drivers and couriers Shariah-compliant financing: Car Diminishing Musharakah financing of up to PKR 5 million, plus Murabaha financing for motorcycles, e-bikes, rickshaws, and handsets, alongside embedded Takaful protection. This is a concrete, current example of MMBL's Islamic financing structures in practice, beyond the three core named products above — though it's specifically for Yango-affiliated drivers, not the general public.

Branch & Window Expansion Plan

MMBL's Islamic banking launched with two dedicated branches (Karachi, then Peshawar) supported by ten Islamic banking windows. MMBL has stated plans to expand this to fifteen branches and twenty windows in its next phase, alongside President & CEO Haaris Mahmood Chaudhary's confirmed plans to scale nationwide and launch a dedicated digital Islamic portfolio.

Conventional vs. Islamic — What Actually Changes

Switching to Islamic banking mode in DOST changes which products and profit structures apply to your account, since Sharia-compliant banking avoids interest-based (riba) mechanisms in favor of profit-and-loss sharing or fee-based structures. MMBL hasn't published a detailed side-by-side comparison of exactly which account and loan terms differ between its Islamic and conventional offerings, so customers deciding between the two should ask MMBL directly what specifically changes for the product they're interested in.
