Two separate deductions can affect an MMBL account holder's balance: Zakat, deducted once a year under the Zakat and Ushr Ordinance 1980, and withholding tax on cash withdrawals, deducted under the Income Tax Ordinance 2001. Neither is set by MMBL — both are national rules that MMBL, like every Pakistani bank, is legally required to apply. This page separates the two clearly and cites the government and FBR notifications behind each figure.

Zakat Deduction on MMBL Accounts

The Government of Pakistan set the Zakat Nisab for 1446–47 A.H. (2026) at PKR 503,529, per a notification from the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety dated February 16, 2026 — a roughly 180% increase from the previous year's PKR 179,689. Banks, including MMBL, deducted Zakat at 2.5% from savings accounts, profit-and-loss sharing accounts, and similar deposit accounts with balances at or above the Nisab on the deduction date, the first day of Ramadan 1447 A.H. (February 19 or 20, 2026, per moon sighting) — this cycle has now passed. The next Nisab figure, for Zakat year 1447–48 A.H. (expected around Ramadan 2027), had not been announced as of this writing; check MMBL or the Ministry's notification closer to next Ramadan for the updated threshold. Accounts below the applicable Nisab on the deduction date are automatically exempt — no action needed. Current (non-profit-bearing) accounts are generally exempt from this deduction regardless of balance.

Claiming a Zakat Exemption

MMBL's own account terms and conditions state that a Zakat exemption declaration must be submitted to the bank at least one month before the valuation date (the first day of Ramadan) to be effective for that Zakat year. This is commonly known as a CZ-50 declaration under the Zakat and Ushr Ordinance 1980. MMBL provides a "Submit Zakat Exemption Form" option on its website for this purpose. If your declaration isn't in place by the deadline, or doesn't match the valuation date, MMBL's terms state Zakat will be levied on maturity or encashment where applicable — so this is worth handling early rather than at the last minute.

Zakat exemption is a religious/legal declaration under the Zakat and Ushr Ordinance 1980 — if you're unsure whether an exemption applies to your situation, that's a question for a religious scholar or legal adviser, not a banking one.

Withholding Tax on Cash Withdrawals

Under Section 231AB of the Income Tax Ordinance 2001, banks — including MMBL — must deduct advance tax from customers who are not on FBR's Active Taxpayer List (ATL), i.e. non-filers, when their aggregate cash withdrawals in a single day exceed PKR 50,000. The current rate is 0.8% of the full amount withdrawn that day, raised from 0.6% by the Finance Act 2025 effective July 1, 2025. Filers — those on the ATL — pay nothing under this section, regardless of how much cash they withdraw.

Filer

0% withholding tax on cash withdrawals, any amount, under Section 231AB.

Non-Filer

0.8% deducted on the full day's withdrawal once the daily total exceeds PKR 50,000.

This tax is calculated on the day's total cash withdrawals, not per transaction — several smaller withdrawals that add up past PKR 50,000 in one day trigger it the same as a single large withdrawal. It's an adjustable advance tax, meaning it can be credited against your final tax liability when you file your annual return.

MMBL's Online Tax Collection Service

Separately from withholding tax, MMBL operates an Online Tax Collection service that lets customers pay government taxes and duties directly through ATMs, internet banking, and the DOST app, rather than in person with cash or paper challans. This is a payment channel MMBL built to align with SBP's digital-payments push — it doesn't change what you owe, just how you can pay it.
