→ How we verify banking data before it goes on this page
Habib Bank Limited HBL is Pakistan's largest bank by branch network and customer base — this page is PakFinHub's complete Habib Bank Limited HBL profile, covering history, ownership, and scale.
HBL, short for Habib Bank Limited, is Pakistan's largest bank by branch network and customer base, and the first commercial bank ever established in the country. Size alone doesn't set it apart from the competition, though. Seven decades as the country's biggest bank has come with an international footprint most rivals simply don't have.
This page pulls together the facts that matter for choosing or researching HBL: how it started, who owns and runs it today, and the scale it operates at now.

Habib Bank Limited HBL — History
HBL was Pakistan's first commercial bank, established in 1947 and headquartered in Karachi from the outset. Its first international branch opened in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 1951, and the landmark Habib Bank Plaza building — still one of Karachi's recognizable skyline features — began operating in 1971 to mark the bank's 25th anniversary. The bank was nationalized by the Government of Pakistan in 1974, a period during which it built up a dominant share of inward foreign remittances and small-industry lending.
That changed in 2004, when the Government of Pakistan privatized HBL: the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED) acquired 51% of the bank's shareholding along with management control. The government's remaining shareholding was fully divested by April 2015, completing the transition to private ownership.

Scale & International Presence
HBL is the largest executor of CPEC-related financing in Pakistan, and China remains a core part of its international strategy even as the rest of its overseas footprint shrinks — the bank has been winding down operations in Afghanistan, Mauritius, Lebanon, Belgium, and Turkey. In November 2019, HBL's Urumqi branch became the first Pakistani bank operation authorized for end-to-end RMB intermediation, one of only three from the South Asia/MENA region to get that clearance. A month later, HBL became the first Pakistani bank awarded a branch license to serve clients in Beijing directly.

Overseas Operations Being Wound Down
HBL's international network isn't uniformly stable — several overseas operations are actively being closed rather than expanded, and this page states that plainly rather than only citing the bank's growth markets.

|---|---|
| Afghanistan | Orderly wind-down commenced; banking operations ceased June 10, 2019. Remaining closure formalities still in progress. |
| Mauritius | Deregistration completed; operations sold and transferred to new owners. Some exit formalities remain underway. |
| Lebanon | Orderly wind-down of operations commenced; completion formalities underway. |
| Belgium | Operations closed and Banking License surrendered after regulatory approval; commercial license cancelled. VAT deregistration pending. |
| Turkey | Regulatory approval received for voluntary liquidation; branch closure formalities in process. |
