Mobilink Microfinance Bank — Account Closure & Dormant Accounts
The 12-month dormancy rule, how to reactivate a suspended account, and what happens to your balance when you close an MMBL account.
- From MMBL's Own T&Cs
- Dormancy & Closure
An MMBL account can end up inactive without you ever deciding to close it, or you may want to close one deliberately. Both situations are governed by MMBL's published Terms and Conditions, and the two follow different rules — this page separates dormancy (something that happens automatically) from closure (something you or MMBL initiate).
When Does an Account Become Dormant?
Per MMBL's Terms and Conditions, an account is classified as dormant/suspended once it has been inoperative for 12 months, or if the account holder's CNIC is not on file with the bank as required by SBP directive. Once dormant, MMBL disallows most transactions on the account — but not all: debits for loan or markup recovery, permissible bank charges, government duties or levies, and any instruction issued by a court of law still go through regardless of dormant status. You can request an address change while an account is dormant, but MMBL's terms state this alone does not change the account's dormant status.
Reactivating a Dormant Account
1. Call from Your Registered Number
Contact MMBL's contact center using the mobile number registered to the account — calling from a different number won't work for this.
2. Verification
MMBL carries out the necessary verification checks before proceeding.
3. Provisional Reactivation (48 Hours)
The account is reactivated provisionally for 48 hours, during which you need to complete a financial transaction.
4. Permanent Reactivation
Once that transaction is completed within the 48-hour window, the account is permanently reactivated.
If you don't complete a transaction within the 48-hour provisional window, the account reverts to dormant and you'd need to repeat the process.
Unclaimed Deposits — the 10-Year Rule
If a deposit or instrument remains inoperative for 10 years, MMBL is required to surrender it to the State Bank of Pakistan as unclaimed, per the Banking Companies Ordinance 1962. This is a national banking rule that applies to all Pakistani banks, not something specific to MMBL — reactivating an account well before the 10-year mark avoids this entirely.
Closing Your MMBL Account Yourself
You can request termination of your account and services at any time, in the manner MMBL prescribes (typically by contacting the helpline or visiting a branch). Per MMBL's terms, the closure takes effect once your request is completed, and you remain responsible for any transactions made through the account up until that point. Account closing charges apply and are deducted before any remaining credit balance is paid out to you.
When MMBL Closes an Account
MMBL's terms give the bank broad discretion to close an account without prior notice — including where it judges the account isn't being "satisfactorily operated," on breach of the terms and conditions, or in the event of the customer's death, bankruptcy, or lack of legal capacity. MMBL's terms state it is not obligated to disclose its reasons to the customer in these cases. If the bank receives formal notice of a customer's death (from heirs or another reliable source), the contractual relationship ends and operations on the account stop immediately — funds can then only be released against a Succession Certificate or other court order.
What Happens to Your Remaining Balance
MMBL considers its obligation discharged once it sends an electronic notification of the closure to your registered mobile number or email. If funds remain in the account at closure, MMBL sends the transaction details — including a 12-digit Transaction ID (TID) — to your registered mobile number. You can then collect the remaining balance at any MMBL-assigned agent or branch nationwide, after biometric verification.
Keep that TID message — it's how you'll actually collect the balance, not just a confirmation notice.
