What Meezan Bank Is

Meezan Bank is a full-service Islamic commercial bank headquartered in Karachi. It operates entirely on Shariah-compliant principles — every deposit product runs on a profit-and-loss-sharing basis (typically Mudarabah), and every financing product is asset-based (Ijarah leasing or Diminishing Musharakah co-ownership) rather than an interest-bearing loan. It is Pakistan's largest Islamic bank by both market capitalization and branch network, and is listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange under the ticker MEBL.

The bank serves retail customers, small businesses, corporates, and a large base of overseas Pakistanis through the State Bank of Pakistan's Roshan Digital Account programme, where Meezan alone captures roughly 29% of all industry-wide inflows — the single largest share of any participating bank.

A Brief History

Meezan Bank received Pakistan's first full-fledged Islamic commercial banking license from the State Bank of Pakistan in January 2002 and commenced operations shortly after, converting from what had originally been an investment bank. Since then it has scaled from a handful of branches to over 1,150 locations across 365 cities, and has received six Best Bank awards from the Pakistan Banking Awards across 2018, 2020, 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026, also winning Best Bank for Customer Engagement in 2026.

Leadership

Dr. Syed Amir Ali is President & CEO, effective December 30, 2025, succeeding founding President & CEO Mr. Irfan Siddiqui, who led the bank from its 2002 launch and remains on Meezan's Board of Directors. Dr. Ali joined Meezan in 2006 and led its Corporate and Investment Banking Group, later served as President & CEO of BankIslami Pakistan from 2018 to 2023, then rejoined Meezan in 2023 as President-Designate and Deputy CEO — meaning the handover was a multi-year planned succession rather than a sudden change at the top. He holds a CFA charter and a PhD in business administration, and is a Harvard Business School alumnus.

In Meezan's own announcement, Dr. Ali's mandate is described as steering the bank's strategic direction and advancing its stated vision of making "Islamic banking the banking of first choice" in Pakistan, with continued emphasis on Shariah compliance, governance, and digital transformation — consistent with the bank's ongoing investment in its mobile app and digital account-opening infrastructure.
