HBL Investment Funds & Zakat Guide
Part of PakFinHub's HBL coverage — see the full bank overview.
HBL mutual funds run through a regulated subsidiary, not the bank directly — here's the full HBL mutual funds lineup and how Zakat applies to them.
HBL's investment products run through a separate, SECP-regulated subsidiary, HBL Asset Management Limited, not the commercial bank directly. That distinction matters: mutual funds carry market risk and aren't deposit products, even though they're sold through HBL's own channels and app.
HBL Mutual Funds — Full Range
Conventional Mutual Funds
Includes HBL Cash Fund, HBL Money Market Fund, and HBL Govt. Security Fund among a broader equity/debt/money-market lineup.
Shariah-Compliant Mutual Funds
A parallel Islamic fund range, including HBL Islamic Money Market Fund, designed under the guidance of HBL Asset Management's Shariah Advisors.
Voluntary Pension Scheme (VPS)
Conventional and Islamic pension fund options. Up to 50% of accumulated funds can be redeemed tax-free at retirement; any amount beyond that is taxed at your average rate over the last 3 years.
Separately Managed Accounts
Customized, professionally managed portfolios for investors who want a bespoke mandate rather than a pooled fund.
Confirmed directly from HBL Asset Management's official site (hblasset.com) and its VPS disclosure document.
Minimum Investment & Encashment Timing
HBL Asset Management's money market and income funds typically set a low entry point: Rs 1,000 minimum initial investment, and Rs 1,000 minimum for subsequent top-ups on funds like the HBL Money Market Fund — you don't need a large lump sum to start. Redemptions are usually processed within 2–3 working days, though the fund's constitutive documents allow up to 6 working days in some cases, so don't assume same-day access to your money the way you would with a savings account.
Confirmed directly from HBL Asset Management's official fund product pages (hblasset.com). Minimums and encashment timelines vary by specific fund — check the individual fund's offering document before investing.
How to Access Your Investments
HBL Asset App
Dedicated app for managing HBL Asset Management investments digitally, alongside WhatsApp-based services.
SMS Service (9300)
Text "BAL <FOLIO number>" to 9300 for your investment balance, or "Zakat <FOLIO number>" to check your Zakat status. Text "Invest" for a call-back from an Investment Advisor.
Risk Profiler & Calculators
HBL Asset Management's website offers a risk profiler tool and savings calculators to help match fund choice to your goals before investing.
Confirmed directly from HBL Asset Management's official Value Added Services page (hblasset.com/value-added-services).
Zakat on Mutual Fund Profit
Profit paid on HBL Asset Management investments is subject to Zakat and Withholding Tax under the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001. Zakat is only exempted if you submit a Zakat exemption certificate or affidavit along with your application — it is not automatic. This is a different treatment from NPCs and RDA accounts, which are exempt from compulsory Zakat deduction by statute; mutual fund investors need to actively file the exemption paperwork.
Confirmed directly from HBL Asset Management's official Basic Fact Sheet / Disclaimer documents.

A Note on Reading the Offering Document
It's tempting to skip straight to past performance figures when comparing funds, but the Offering Document's fee structure section often matters just as much to your actual return. Management fees, front-end loads, and exit charges vary between funds and compound over time in ways a simple performance chart won't show. A fund with slightly lower historical returns but meaningfully lower fees can outperform net of costs over a multi-year holding period.
