DIB Shariah Board & Islamic Banking Governance

Part of PakFinHub's DIB coverage — who oversees Shariah compliance, and how deposit profit actually gets distributed.

  • Dedicated Pakistan Shariah Board
  • Mudaraba-Based Profit

Every product page on this site describes a DIB financing structure as Shariah-compliant, but none of them say who actually decides that, or how DIB turns depositor money into the profit rates published on our Profit Rates page. This page covers both: DIBPL's own Shariah Board, and the underlying Mudaraba mechanism its profit-sharing runs on. We're deliberately conservative here — we're not qualified to make independent Shariah rulings, so everything below is attributed directly to DIB's own official documentation rather than our interpretation.

DIBPL's Shariah Board

DIB Pakistan maintains its own dedicated Shariah Board on dibpak.com, separate from the Group-level Shariah Board of the UAE parent, Dubai Islamic Bank PJSC. DIBPL's official site describes this board as supervising the bank's "day to day working & business" from a Shariah-compliance standpoint, alongside a separate Board of Directors handling conventional corporate governance.

DIBPL has also published an official Annual Report of its Shariah Board in past years, and maintains a dedicated "Ask Sharia (FAQs) / FATWA" resource and a "Conventional and Islamic Differences" explainer directly on dibpak.com — both worth reading in full if you want DIB's own detailed reasoning on a specific product structure rather than our summary of it.

How DIB Turns Deposits Into Profit: The Mudaraba Mechanism

DIBPL's own audited financial statements describe its core deposit structure in specific terms: depositors are Rabb-ul-Maal (the providers of capital), and the bank acts as Mudarib (the fund manager investing that capital). Remunerative deposits are pooled into a General Pool, and the funds are then allocated to financing across Corporate, SME, and Consumer Finance customers — the same three segments broken out on our Financial Data page.

Profit generated by the pool is shared among depositors based on weightages the bank announces before each profit-calculation period starts, after DIB deducts its Mudarib fee (its share for managing the pool). On top of the base weightage-based distribution, DIB can allocate an additional discretionary amount called Hiba (an incentive profit, gifted rather than contractually owed) across the board, following SBP guidelines. This weightage-and-Hiba structure is why the specific rate you actually earn on a DIB savings product can differ from a simple headline percentage — it depends on which pool weightage category your product falls into and whether Hiba was distributed that period.

What Happens to Non-Compliant Income

DIBPL's financial statements also disclose what happens if any income doesn't comply with Shariah principles: it's recognised as charity payable, if so directed by the Shari'a Board or the Resident Shari'a Board Member. This is a standard purification mechanism used across Islamic banks generally, and DIB's own statements confirm it applies to DIBPL specifically, not just as an abstract Islamic-banking principle.

Islamic Banking & Shariah FAQs

Does Dubai Islamic Bank Pakistan have its own Shariah Board?

Yes. DIBPL maintains its own Shariah Board, distinct from the UAE parent's Group Shariah Board, which oversees the bank's day-to-day Shariah compliance, per DIB Pakistan's official website.

Who is on DIB Pakistan's Shariah Board?

Confirmed named members on DIB Pakistan's official board members page include Mufti Hassaan Kaleem (Member, Shari'ah Board) and Syed Muhammad Abu Bakar (Resident Shari'ah Board Member, over 10 years of Islamic finance experience).

How does DIB Pakistan distribute profit to depositors?

Under a Mudaraba structure: the bank acts as Mudarib (fund manager) investing pooled depositor funds, while depositors are Rabb-ul-Maal (capital providers). Profit is shared based on pre-announced weightages, with an additional discretionary Hiba (incentive profit) allocated per SBP guidelines.

What happens to income that doesn't comply with Shariah principles?

Per DIBPL's own audited financial statements, any income received that does not comply with Shariah principles is recognised as charity payable, if so directed by the Shari'a Board or Resident Shari'a Board Member.

Is DIB Pakistan's Shariah Board the same as DIB UAE's?

No. DIBPL is a separate legal entity with its own dedicated Shariah Board overseeing its Pakistan operations, distinct from the Shariah Board of the UAE parent, Dubai Islamic Bank PJSC.
