DIB Account Closure, Dormant & Deceased Accounts

Part of PakFinHub's DIB coverage — the account-lifecycle situations nobody wants to research until they need to.

  • Closure
  • Dormant Reactivation
  • Deceased Accounts

Three distinct situations, each with its own DIB process: closing an account you still control, reactivating one that's gone dormant, and what happens when an account holder dies.

Closing Your Account

Submit your debit/ATM card and any unused cheque book to your home branch, and fill out an account closure request form. Once closed, every service tied to the account — debit card, cheque book, standing instructions, digital banking access — terminates automatically; nothing carries forward to a new account by default.

DIB also reserves the right to close an account itself, without giving a reason, on 15 days' advance written notice. If you don't withdraw the funds within that notice period, DIB proceeds with closure regardless.

Dormant Accounts

An account goes dormant after an extended period of inactivity. What counts as "activity" is stricter than you might assume: DIB's own terms specify that system-generated transactions don't reactivate a dormant account, and neither do passive credits like inward remittances, clearing, or cash deposits made into it. Only a genuine customer-initiated reactivation request brings it back.

Once dormant, DIB will refuse to debit the account entirely — no cheques, payment orders, or other negotiable instruments will clear against it until it's reactivated.

How to Reactivate

Visit your home branch with a valid identity document and submit a written reactivation application, following DIB's own procedure/form. DIB's terms also mention that a reactivation request can be generated through other channels, though the branch-with-ID route is the one explicitly documented.

Unclaimed Deposits

Under Section 31 of the Banking Companies Ordinance, 1962, any deposit with no activity for the last 10 years — except accounts belonging to a minor, a government body, or a court of law — must be surrendered by DIB to the State Bank of Pakistan. This isn't unique to DIB; it's a statutory requirement every Pakistani bank follows. If this happens to your account, you can still claim the funds afterward through your home branch.

Deceased Account Holder

DIB marks an account "Deceased" as soon as it receives formal notice of death, and suspends all operations until legal entitlement to the funds is established — no withdrawals happen automatically to anyone, including a joint holder, without that process. Report a death to DIB immediately regardless of account type or operating instructions.

For joint accounts, the balance is disposed of according to the law and regulations in force at the time. Closing a deceased holder's account specifically requires the written consent of all surviving account holders, not just one.

Account Closure, Dormant & Deceased FAQs

How do I close my DIB account?

Submit your debit/ATM card and unused cheque book to your home branch and fill out an account closure request form. All services linked to the account terminate automatically once it's closed.

How does a DIB account become dormant?

No transaction for more than six months, per DIB's official Terms and Conditions. Passive credits like inward remittances, clearing, or system-generated transactions do not reactivate a dormant account — only a customer-initiated request does.

Can DIB close my account if it stays dormant?

Yes — if a dormant account's balance falls below Rs 1,000, DIB can close it after giving 30 days' notice, per DIB's official Key Fact Statement.

How do I reactivate a dormant DIB account?

Visit your home branch with a valid identity document and submit a written reactivation application per DIB's procedure. Other channels may also be available — confirm with DIB directly.

What happens to unclaimed deposits at DIB?

Under Section 31 of the Banking Companies Ordinance, 1962, deposits with no activity for 10 years (except minor, government, or court accounts) are surrendered to the State Bank of Pakistan. You can still claim them through DIB afterward.

What happens to a DIB account when the account holder dies?

DIB marks the account as "Deceased" upon formal notice of death, and suspends operations until legal entitlement is established. For joint accounts, the balance is disposed of per prevailing law, and closure requires written consent from all surviving account holders.
